Porphyry Tiles
and Cobblestones Installation
Following are guidelines to installing Porphyry Pavers, using a sand set method.
The most important factor in the
success of the installation is the preparation of the substrate foundation.
The foundation predicts the
strength and durability of the Porphyry Pavers application.
-
To maintain a solid sand set
installation, a solider course is recommended. A soldier course is a solid
frame or edging which holds the pavers in firmly. It can be in the form of
an existing wall, or a cement or stone frame.
-
The foundation is then laid
within the frame, or soldier course. The foundation consists of 200-300mm of
crushed stone base material, which is compacted firmly using a plate
compactor. The next layer of the foundation is the sand bed, which consists
of 60-80mm of course sand. At the top there should be enough depth to cater
for the pavers.
-
Porphyry Pavers are available
in the form of tiles or cubes for paving. They come in varying lengths and
thicknesses. The thicker the Porphyry Pavers the more heavy duty for traffic
they become. So if you’re using them for your patio, perhaps the thinnest
cubes or tiles will be suitable.
-
Set your grading levels at
approximately 1.5 cm per Meter drop, using string or level. The string also
helps with the alignment of the pavers.
-
Start to place Pavers in the
sand bedding, tapping them in firmly. Check for the alignment and level
constantly. Remove any uneven pavers, adding or removing sand, and replacing
the pavers, to achieve the correct level. With natural stone screeding is
not necessary.
-
It is now time for the joints
to be filled. You can sweep sand over the surface, filling the joints, or
you may perhaps use a dry mortar set, consisting of a dry mix of cement and
sand (1 to 3), which is also swept over the surface.
-
Use a plate compactor to set
the porphyry pavers into the sand firmly.
-
If you chose to use a dry
mortar set, then soak the joints with water while compacting.
-
Finally, clean the area of
excess grout and sand, and sponge over the pavers for extra a clean surface.
